Abstract

Various signal processing functions have been demonstrated in the past decade by the nonlinear mixing1 of oppositely propagating surface acoustic waves in piezoelectric media. One of the output signals occurs as bulk acoustic waves2 generated normal to the surface. Here we report the optical analog of this nonlinear acoustic interaction which utilizes nonlinear, planar integrated optics.
