Abstract

Bragg waveguides1-3 utilize the high reflectivity of a periodic layered medium to propagate light in a surface layer whose index may be lower than that of the substrate. In the case of monolithic integration of optical waveguides on high-index substrates such as GaAs, InP, and Si, the relatively low index of deposited layers makes Bragg waveguides especially useful in reducing the radiation loss due to field penetration into the substrate.
