Abstract

A variety of semiconductor optical devices have been utilized in optical communications and in other optical systems. They are all discrete devices and used with their electronic circuits. In the future, monolithic integration of optical devices with associated electronic circuits, optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEIC), will become important. The monolithic integration, the OEIC, will provide superior characteristics, such as higher speeds, compared with discrete devices. For example, ultrahigh speed communication systems will require such OElCs.
