Abstract

The terminal equipment that will be used in early transmission systems employing optical fiber lines will be similar to terminal equipment now used in transmission systems employing electrical lines, except for transducers at the line - terminal interfaces. Functions such as amplification and regeneration will be achieved by conventional electronic means. This paper describes the configuration and projected performance of terminals that are expected to be used in early optical fiber transmission systems.
