Abstract
The current trend in integrated optics and optoelectronics is toward more complicated structures. Analytic expressions and the numerical analysis of the physics of simple devices are indispensable for understanding the characteristics of a device. An analytic expression is also useful as a starting point in a design. However, the large number of effective degrees of freedom in a complex structure necessitate optimization routines to reach the best configuration.
