Abstract

In this paper we analyze the blazing effect in second-order gratings with asymmetric tooth shapes and examine the applicability of the effect for improving the efficiency of grating-coupled surface-emitting (GSE) lasers. Figure 1 shows a schematic of the second-order distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) analyzed in this paper. A residual or buffer layer tg<x< tg + tb is introduced to control the coupling between the guided waves and the grating, which has a relatively large thickness in order to obtain the effect of blazing.
