Abstract

There has recently been interest in using grating-assisted couplers as wavelength-selective filters1,2 in integrated optoelectronics. A schematic diagram of the grating-assisted coupler is depicted in Fig. 1. Two dielectric waveguides are put in close proximity to permit coupling through the interaction of the evanescent fields of their guided modes. A set of gratings is placed with its axis parallel to the direction of wave propagation. The role of the periodic grating is to facilitate phase matching for the modes with different propagation constants so that efficient power exchange between the two guides can occur.
