Abstract
A single-mode technology capable of fabrication of a variety of passive fiber components for the subscriber loop is discussed. In the fabrication process, fibers are stripped and embedded in a third index glass matrix (Fig. 1). The composite glass structure subsequently is heated and tapered to induce power transfer to the adjacent fiber or fibers, in the tapered region, the mode power distribution of the initial LP01 mode is expanded into the third index material as a result of the changing geometric configuration. The coupling mechanism can be adequately described using coupled mode theory,1 and the eigen solution to the multiple index medium.2,3
