Abstract
The effectiveness of statistical analysis techniques in the management of manufacturing processes is well established, but application of these techniques in the automotive stamping and assembly environment has been difficult because the size and dimensional complexity of the product have made measurement of timely and statistically significant samples prohibitively expensive. Non-contact machine vision utilizing "structured light" or "optical sectioning" techniques overcomes this difficulty, permitting one, two, and three dimensional measurements to be automatically recorded and analysed at production line rates.
