Abstract

All work on nonlinear couplers gives one the impression that previous knowledge of linear couplers must be completely abandoned. In particular, linear (axially uniform) couplers have normal modes which do not couple whereas the analysis of nonlinear couplers has been via coupled mode theory1,2,3.
