Nonlinear Coupling of Planar Waveguide Modes Propagating in Different Directions

Abstract

Theoretical possibility of nonlinear coupling between planar waveguide modes propagating in different directions is examined. The phenomenon consists in third-order nonlinear interaction between two guided modes (initial and generated) and two waves falling from outside on the waveguide surface. The propagation direction and intensity of the generated mode depend on the properties of the external waves. Therefore, the possibility of nonlinear, partially transparent mirror with regulated angle and reflectance, placed inside the waveguide slab appears.
