Exact Noise-Figure Formulas for Optical Amplifiers and Amplifier-Fiber Cascaded Chains

Abstract

An erroneous noise-figure (NF) cascading formula has sometimes been used at optical frequencies. This paper presents for the first time exact NF formulas for optical amplifiers, and a correct cascading formula to be used in the analysis of amplifier-fiber cascaded chains.
