Measured performance of a laser diode direct detection optical communication system at very low received signal energies

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Semiconductor laser diodes, although far from ideal laser sources, are attractive candidates as transmitters in free space satellite-to-satellite optical communication systems. Both average and peak output power limitations of these devices make low alphabet size optical pulse position modulation (PPM) an attractive signal format for direct detection systems.
