Abstract

A set of experimental results is presented showing the conversion of an input beam into scattered radiation by noise gratings recorded either by a single beam or by two beams of varying beam ratio. In the latter case the conversion into noise is strongly dependent on whether the angular range of the replay beam is in the vicinity of that of the strong beam or of the weak beam. A previously published theory,1 representing the scattered radiation by a very large number of plane waves and assuming a nondepleted transmitted beam, is generalized. The theory presented is valid for high efficiency but needs a numerical solution of the resulting coupled wave differential equations. Curves for the angular variation of the replay beam are shown both for single-and double-beam recording and compared to the experimental results. The effect of processing the silver halide material is also discussed.
