Abstract

We explicitly carry through the extension of coupled-mode theory for optical fibers in the multimode case, illustrating our results with the design of a special coupler formed of two multimode graded-index slab-guides. This coupler may find applications as a mode filter, alignment sensor, or feed component of an optical monopulse tracking radar.
