Optimizing the signal-to-noise ratio from a magneto-optic head

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

In a magneto-optic head with differential detection, the light level on the data detectors is determined by the ratio γ2 of a semipolarizing beam splitter. The different noise sources in the system are analyzed, and their dependence on γ2 is determined. It is shown how to use this information to choose the value of γ2 that optimizes the SNR.
