Descartes ovals as wavefronts

Abstract

For refraction Descartes ovals are only of historical and theoretical interest as their practical uses are nil. But they also occur as wavefronts and here they are useful and omnipresent but, as they go about their business so discreetly, few optimists are aware of them.
