On systematic errors in characterizing chaos

Abstract

We experimentally examined the recent prediction [1] that low pass filtering of a chaotic signal can lead to significant overestimation of the dimension of the attractor. We used signals from an electronic circuit simulating the behaviour of a chaotic hybrid optical device [2], thus the experimental restraints of small data sets and low bit resolution were introduced, while the noise of the device played a minor role. Corresponding tests on the Hénon system were also performed.
