Abstract

The performance of present magneto-optical disk devices is limited by the relatively large size and weight of the optical head. The use of optical fibers has been proposed as one technique for reducing the size and weight of optical heads used with contrast media.1 In this paper, we extend this idea and propose a scheme for using single-mode polarization preserving (SMPP) fibers in magneto-optical recording heads. In addition to reducing the size and weight, optical fibers are well suited to achieving simultaneous access to multiple channels.
