Abstract
There is currently considerable interest in the telecommunication area in using coherent detection techniques to improve the sensitivity of optical-fiber receiver systems. If coherent detection can be achieved, data can be transmitted by frequency or phase shift keying of the optical carrier, and an improvement of the order of 15 dB in equivalent receiver sensitivity over the direct detection scheme is predicted.
