Abstract
Optical coatings have long been considered a rather elusive product to characterize and understand. The types of coatings available are legion. Their complexity and the vast number of factors that affect the final product produce an air of mystery that cause some individuals to consider optical coatings as a rather expensive "black art". Coating engineers are thought of as modern day wizards who have traded their black cauldrons for gleaming coating chambers.
