Abstract

PURPOSE OF THIS PAPER: This paper is being presented to acquaint members of the optical community with the goals of the Standards Committee, and with current efforts of the committee toward achieving these goals. It is the intent of this and the accompanying papers to develop an interest among optical practitioners, designers, and manufacturers in the development and improvement of optical standards, and to encourage their active participation in the overall process of planning, writing, and commentary that will result in standards that meet the needs of the optical community.
