Improvement of abrasion resistance of SiO2/TiO2 multilayer interference filters

Abstract

Progress has been made in the development and practical applications of various types of multilayer interference filters (1). Among them, infrared reflection filters(IRF) are strongly expected to be widely used as a solar radiation shielding on the window glass of automibiles(2)-(5). However, it has been impossible to apply the multilayer interference coatings to the window glass of automobiles or buildings because of their lack of sufficient abrasion resistance. In order to improve the abrasion resistance, the multilayer stacks were usually subjected to heat treatment at high temperature of around 500°C-600°C or more. Such high-temperature heat treatment, however, could not be appliciable to the window glass of automobiles.
