Abstract

Systems applications in the far-infrared (FIR) region of the spectrum (40 μm - 2 mm) offer several advantages over conventional microwave/millimeter and visible/infrared techniques. Specifically for a required resolution a significant reduction over microwave antenna size can be realized in the FIR, in addition to reduction of clutter return, more accurate object location, better size discrimination, and a larger bandwidth. FIR radiation also suffers less scattering losses by aerosols than the visible/infrared and can better penetrate fogs and smokes [1].
