Abstract

Active mode-locking of semiconductor lasers1 is a useful technique for the generation of short, high peak-power optical pulses. For communication purposes, these pulse trains may subsequently be encoded by a modulator, which can either be integrated with the mode-locked laser2 or external and coupled to it using an optical fiber3. The external cavity of mode-locked lasers can take various forms1. In all reported schemes however, the output is from a cleaved laser chip facet. Coupling to an output fiber consequently incurrs a coupling loss of 3-5dB. In this paper we describe the first mode-locked 1.55 μm InGaAsP-optical -fiber composite-cavity laser with a single-mode fiber output. The laser output is coupled to a fiber of the same type as used for the cavity with a coupling loss of less than 0.5dB.
