Abstract

Effects of atomic coherence induced by a strong laser field in three-level systems such as lasing without inversion, electromagnetically induced transparency, and enhanced index of refraction have attracted much attention recently.1 Traditionally atom-field interaction was considered separately from the process of atomic relaxation. The last one was taken into account by means of atomic, relaxation rates independent of external laser field.
