Imaging Microchannel Plate Detector Systems

Abstract

The microchannel plate (MCP) is a high-gain electron multiplier which can also provide a high-resolution imaging capability. A very wide range of imaging detector systems based on the MCP have been developed for use at all wavelengths from the x-ray region to the near infrared. The ability of the MCP to operate stably in an open-structure configuration under high vacuum makes it particularly useful for studies at extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray wavelengths. Sealed detector tubes in which the photocathode material is deposited directly on, or is mounted in proximity-focus with the front face of the MCP are widely used at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. The intrinsic simplicity and rugged nature of these MCP detectors makes them particularly suitable for use in instruments for studies in space.
