Abstract
After over 20 years of experience with the interpretation of remote sensing data from weather satellites we still find our attention directed towards methods of inversion of infrared and microwave temperature (and moisture) sounding data. This is due in part to the fact that the mathematical problem here is fundamentally incomplete, and the accuracy of the solution invariably depends on the use of some forms of mathematical or physical constraints. Furthermore, in dealing with real data we encounter the problems of noise in observations, uncertainties about the optical properties of the atmosphere, and the presence of clouds and aerosols.
