Abstract

In a previous paper on the theory of mode-locking by synchronous pumping (MLSP) [1], we reported a discrepancy between the pulse profiles predicted by the standard "Self-Consistent Profile" (SCP) technique and those obtained numerically. Here, we confirm that the SCP method fails near optimum cavity tuning and we show why this occurs. Recent computer results demonstrating the perturbative influence of spontaneous emission on the pulse profiles under nominally steady-state conditions are also presented.
