Stabilization of Atoms in Ultra-Intense Laser Pulses: A Classical Model.

Abstract

Recent theoretical studies,[1,2] have suggested that atomic stabilization could be observed in very strong high-frequency laser pulses, with peak intensities beyond the atomic unit of intensity: I0 = 3.5 1016W/cm2 . These predictions contradict the commonly accepted view [3], that bound systems would not survive to the rise of the pulse as they would be ionized well before the pulse has reached its maximum of intensity. Several of these recent studies are based on numerical simulations performed for a simplified 1-dimension model, proposed a few years ago [2].
