N-OH Torsional Frequencies of Some Hydroxylamines

Abstract

Recently the far infrared spectra of alcohols, phenols, and oximes and aldoximes have been recorded for dilute solutions of these compounds in cyclohexane. For all of these molecules the hydroxyl torsional vibrations were found to result in intense bands, relative to the bands arising from the low frequency skeletal vibrations. In the spectra of aliphatic alcohols the hydroxyl torsional vibrations occur at 210 ± 10 cm<sup>−1</sup>, but for phenol the frequency is 310 cm<sup>−1</sup>. The difference in frequencies reflects the different shapes of the potential functions and barrier heights for hydroxyl group internal rotation in the two classes of molecules.
