Author Position and Order

The criteria used to determine the order in which authors are listed on a manuscript may vary among scientific disciplines and should be determined collectively by the authors in advance of submission.  Some examples of common ways to determine author order include the following:

  • Reflective of contributions
  • Alphabetical
  • Student first if based on dissertation
  • Senior researcher or principal investigator last
  • Independent of rank or status
