Abstract

Most near infrared researchers agree that spectra contain redundant information, especially spectra obtained with scanning instruments. Only a few feel confident about removing information before performing calibrations. In this study, smoothing and combing were used to remove quantitative information from the spectra. Results show that while some smoothing may be needed especially for noisy instruments, excessive smoothing does derate the performance of calibrations. However, it was surprising to find that that information removal by smoothing and combing, even when taken to extremes, does not produce catastrophic results.
