Phaseonium: A Nonabsorbing Medium With Ultra-Large Index of Refraction

Abstract

It is not very unusual to have an index of refraction of an optical medium of the order of 10 or even 100, if it is accompanied by a considerable absorption. We here, however, would like to put forward various atomic schemes that are both nonabsorptive and highly dispersive at a certain frequency.
