Abstract
The development of digital optical switching and signal processing devices is strongly dependent on the availability of suitable nonlinear optical materials. In this paper we report what we believe to be a major step in this direction - the demonstration of extremely large optical nonlinearities at room-temperature in GaAs-GaAlAs multiple quantum well (MQW) structures. Previous demonstrations of comparable nonlinearities utilized cooled semiconductors1.
