Abstract
Low-cost optical components are urgently needed for the impending arrival of optical subscriber systems. Several efforts have been made using waveguides for bidirectional devices,1-2 however, they require coupling of waveguides to single-mode fibers. We have proposed3 a novel receiver for dual-wavelength detection having an embedded fiber circuit with surface-mounted photo diodes (PDs). Using this technique, it is possible to make an in-line receiver device connected to a transmitting laser diode (LD) module, because the primary transmission media, the fiber, remains intact through the receiver module.
