Abstract

Passive Q-switching of solid-state lasers with solid-state saturable absorbers is a very attractive Q-switching technique because it allows to develop compact and low-cost laser sources of nano-and subnanosecond pulses for various applications. In this connection, the Co2+-doped materials are very attractive because of they possess saturable absorption in the eye-safe spectral range. We report the relaxation times of the 4A24T1(4F) absorption bleaching and absorption cross sections at 1.34 µm and 1.54 µm as well as passive Q-switch performance at 1.34 µm of the Co2+:LiGa5O8 (LGO) and Co2+:MgAl2O4 (MALO) crystals.
