Abstract

The Nd3+:KGd(WO4)2 (Nd:KGW) is very attractive active medium for diode-pumped solid state lasers due to the possibility of 1.35-µm lasing and Raman self-frequency conversion to the 1.55-µm eye-safe region. Efficient Raman shifting could be obtained with passive Q-switches. In this connection the search for the new passive saturable absorbers for the 1.35-µm Nd3+:KGd(WO4)2 laser is of topical interest. Recently, V3+:Y3Al5O12 and Co2+:MgAl2O4 crystals were shown to be promising Q-switches for 1.3-µm solid state lasers [1,2]. Here we report on the results of testing of Co2+:MgAl2O4 (Co:MALO) and V3+:Y3A15O12 (V:YAG) as passive Q-switches for diode pumped Nd-KGW laser at 1.35 µm.
