Abstract
Here we shall show that soliton propagation in lumped amplified systems is described by the lossless NLS provided two conditions are fulfilled. The first is that the power from the amplifier is such that on average (over the amplifier link) the power is equal to the single soliton value in the lossless NLS. This we call the average soliton prescription. The second is that the amplifier spacing is short compared to the nonlinear evolution length scale.
