Abstract

The dispersion characteristics of nonlinear waveguides consisting of one or more dielectric layers possessing an optical Kerr nonlinearity is of great current interest. This is a result of the potential for device applications inherent in such waveguides. Guiding structures consisting of various self-focusing, or self-focusing and linear layers have been the most widely studied (for a recent review see Ref. [1]); the problem consisting of two semi-infinite self-defocusing layers has been only recently addressed [2]. In this paper, we present new results for a hybrid multilayer waveguide comprised of alternating self-focusing and self-defocusing layers. Eigensolutions for the multi-layered structures are obtained and analytic and numerical stability issues are discussed.
