Abstract
It has been proposed to reduce the spectral width of a free-electron laser using a birefringent plate at the Brewster angle. The linewidth can be controlled by rotating the plate. This would be particularly useful for a storage ring FEL where a linewidth of 10−5–10−6 should be achievable without significant reduction of gain. Sapphire looks like a good candidate in the 0.15–1.0-μm wavelength range.
