Effect of changing dye flow velocity on the fluctuations of a dye laser

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Because of the possibility of triplet state quenching, the behavior of a dye laser is expected to be affected by changes in dye flow velocity. We have investigated the effect on the intensity fluctuations of changing the jet flow velocity of a single-mode dye laser in the range 12.1 to 13.4 m/s. Both the mean light intensity and the dispersion <(ΔI)2> were obtained from photon counting measurements. At first it appears that changing the flow velocity has a significant effect on the relation between <(ΔI)2> and <I>. However, the closer examination reveals that changing the flow velocity affects the orientation and thickness of the dye jet. After compensating for these effects we find that the relation between <(ΔI)2 >/<I>2 and <I> remains unchanged over the velocity range 12.1 to 13.4 m/s.
