Abstract
Digital switching and optical transmission systems through fibers are being used in Hong Kong not only to meet growth requirements of public telecommunications, but also to replace existing analogue systems un a massive programme. On the other side, in order to cope with the ever-increasing demand on reliable and wideband communication channels for power system operations, the HK power supply industry has commenced to establish a large backbone fiber communication network. This paper reviews how these new systems affect both the user and the operator.
