Abstract

The original publication1 on equivalent layers lists a design of a wide bandpass and a two-layer antireflection coating AR. This paper surveys of some of the more recent uses of equivalent layers in multilayer design. An equivalent layer consists of a symmetrical group of nonabsorbing films. If the symbols A, B, C, and D each represent a nonabsorbing layer, then equivalent layers are represented by groups containing an odd number of layers, such as ABA, ABCBA, ABCDCBA, and so on.
