Abstract
Analytical investigations of active mode-locking have been restricted in the past to the stationary case or to a specific initial situation. The statistical character of the initial condition of multimode lasers starting from spontaneous emission was completely omitted. In this work a novel concept is presented which incorporates the complicated temporal and frequency structure of the initial condition, introducing collective temporal laser modes instead of conventional frequency modes.
