Common Types of Peer Review

Single anonymous: Editors and reviewers are aware of the identity of the authors, but the authors are not aware of the identity of the reviewers or, in some instances, the identity of the editors

Double anonymous: Reviewers and authors are not aware of each other’s identities

Open review:  The identity of the both the authors and reviewers is known by all participants, during or after the review process

Transparent review: Review reports are posted with the published article

Collaborative review: Two or more reviewers work together, often with the editor, to submit a unified report, or an author revises their manuscript by working directly with one or more reviewers

Post-publication review: Online review of a published article.  Note that, in some instances, the paper may have undergone peer review prior to acceptance
