Abstract

Localized structures (LSs) in the field of optical resonators are intensively studied because of their potential application in future all-optical storage schemes. They were found for various types of nonlinearities where saturation seems to be essential. The cavity field U under the action of diffraction and an instantaneous saturable defocusing nonlinearity is given by the normalized equation: where Uin is the continuous plane wave (CPW) driving field, Δ the detuning from the resonance position and s the maximum nonlinearly induced resonance shift. By varying the detuning different kinds of instabilities of the CPW solution are induced leading to bistability or pattern formation but never to self oscillations.
