6. Writing Your Manuscript

References

References

Your references serve several purposes.  Firstly, they provide important context for your work and allow for the integration of new studies with previously published results.  In addition, by citing other work in the same field, you can avoid any perception of plagiarism and demonstrate the credibility of your article by clearly identifying which ideas are yours and which ideas belong to someone else.

References can be formatted in many different ways.  Check a journal’s instructions prior to submitting to ensure that your references are prepared and called out within the text in the correct format. Some journals prefer that citations are called out in the text and listed in the reference section in order of appearance.  Other journals prefer that a reference section is formatted alphabetically. Reference management software such as EndNote or BibTeX can help you to format your references in accordance with many journals’ styles.

References in Optica Publishing Group journals should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first referenced in the body of the paper.
